Charles W. 'Chuck' Boals, 93, a long-time resident of Elyria, entered into eternal rest Tuesday, April 9, 2024 after a brief illness. He was born January 19, 1931 in Milan, Ohio.
He was a 1949 graduate of Elyria public schools, where he played basketball and baseball. Chuck enjoyed Cascade Park and YMCA basketball in his earlier years as well as continued enjoyment of camping and fishing. Additionally, he helped to organize local baseball leagues. After graduation, he married his high school sweetheart, Geraldine Reisz, and raised two daughters, Sherry and Marcia.
Chuck initially worked for Elyria Telephone Company. In 1953, he was hired by and proudly served the Elyria Fire Department, retiring as Assistant Fire Chief in 1983. He continued to serve in capacity as Fire Chaplain for many years after his retirement. During those years, he also worked part time at Elyria Arts frame shop and continued his hobby of woodworking until recent years.
He was a man of strong Christian faith, most recently as a member of the Lorain Lighthouse United Methodist Church, where he served as a lay leader and lay speaker. He was a devoted husband, father, stepfather, and grandfather.
Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Elizabeth A. 'Becky' (nee Todd) Boals, of Elyria; daughter, Sherry (Greg) Dwyer, of Elyria; stepdaughter, Kimberly K. (Christopher) Spears of Lorain; stepson, Thomas R. (Laura) Spayd of Elyria; granddaughters, Melissa (Randy) Harrison, Kayla Spears, Sarah and Rachel Spayd; and great-grandsons, Bradyn and Travis Harrison. He is also survived by brother-in-law, William Todd; and sisters-in-law, Nancy Turner and Linda Smith.
He was preceded in death by his first wife of 35 years, Geraldine Boals in 1985; his daughter, Marcia Smith; grandson, Brady Smith in 2000; and his parents, Charles and Rose Boals.
The family will receive friends Saturday, April 13, 2024 from 9 a.m. until the time of services at 11 a.m. at Lorain Lighthouse United Methodist Church, 3015 Meister Road, Lorain, Ohio. Pastor Greg Sellers and Pastor Adam Davis will preside. Burial immediately following at Ridge Hill Cemetery. The Elyria Fire Department will provide burial honors for Asst. Chief Boals.
