John Raymond Tilbury, 97, of Lorain passed away on January 31, 2024 at the Joshua Tree Care Center in North Olmsted after a prolonged illness, with his longtime companion and caregiver, Theresa (Terri) De Shon, by his side.
Mr. Tilbury was born in Amesbury, MA on December 20, 1926, the son of the late John R. and Florence E (nee Bradshaw) Tilbury. He was a graduate of Amesbury High School in Amesbury.
Following high school, Mr. Tilbury enlisted in the United States Navy as an apprentice seaman Class Y-12A. He served from 1944 through 1946, earning a Honorable discharge and WW II Victory Medal, American Theatre Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Medal, Previous Service V-12 (Dec 29, 1943 ~ April 6, 1944). Having served his country well in the Navy and desiring to continue his military career, He enlisted in the United States Marine Corp. He progressed to the rank of Staff Sergeant serving in Korea. In the Korean War, he obtained the World War II Victory Medal, American Theater Medal, Presidential Unit Citation with one bronze Star, Korean Service Ribbon with 5 Bronze Stars, and the Good Conduct Medal.
He was a member of Former Northminster Presbyterian in Lorain.
Mr. Tilbury retired as an Executive Vice President with at Roth Manufacturing Corp. following 37 years of service.
He was a member of the Workshop Players in Amherst, Vermilion Playhouse, and the Lochaber Pipe Band. He enjoyed square dancing and roller skating.
John is survived by daughters, Rebekha L ( Gary Giglio) Tilbury, of Broomfield, CO, Johanna L Tilbury living in Hawaii, sons Robert C Tilbury of Dayton, James R (Kelly)Tilbury, of Modale, IA, grandchildren ~ Derek Park, Noah Tilbury, , his longtime companion and caregiver Theresa DeShon of Elyria.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother Donald E. Tilbury and sister Dorothy M. Pike.
Friends may call at the funeral home on March 14, 2024 from 10:00 am until services at 11:00 am. in the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home for Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain, Ohio 44052 the Rev. Wendy Langenderfer officiating.
Military graveside services will be held on March 15, 2024 at 11:15 am in the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, 10175 Rawiga Road, Seville 44273 in Rittman.
